The Philodendron 'Black Cardinal' is named for its gorgeous glossy black-green leaves that start out red. New leaves start out a rich burgundy red and then mature to dark green and black-green. Similar to other colorful Philodendron varieties, the Black Cardinal is not a vining plant.

Indoor houseplants need a balanced mix of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium to maintain healthy leaves, vibrant flowers, and a strong root system. Most indoor houseplant plant foods will provide the right amount of nutrients for a wide variety of plants. Many include additional nutrients that are beneficial to plants such as boron, magnesium, and manganese. Plant foods come in different forms such as liquid, slow-release, or granular products.

This type of soil mix is ideal for most houseplants because it’s well-draining, lightweight, and easy to handle. A good indoor houseplant soil mix will include ingredients such as compost, pine bark, coir, worm castings, peat moss, hydrafiber, or perlite.
