📚 Koa Care Guide

Koa details
💧️ Water - Medium Water OR High Water
Moderate Water Needs
Koa requires a moderate amount of water. You will want to allow the top few inches of soil dry in between waterings. As a general rule of thumb, depending on where you have planted and how much light your Koa receives, you may need to water once a week.

Growing Indoors
If you are growing indoors or in a container, you can always check the moisture of the soil by using your thum or finger. Stick it in the soil -- if it is dry, then you will likely want to water your Koa.

Pot selection is also important to keep your Koa from getting too wet. It is important to select a pot with plenty of drainage holes as this will allow excess water to train out of the pot rather than to just sit on the bottom. Drainage holes also allow air to get into the soil from the bottom of the pot. Using a terracotta pot or another type of pot made of a permeable material can also help keepKoa from getting too wet. Terracotta and other similar materials allow water to wick away from the soil faster than they would in a plastic pot.

Growing Outdoors
If you are growing Koa outdoors, the amount of light your plant is receiving is key to determining how often to water your plant. Plants that require moderate water, generally do best if they can get some respite from the sun during the day as it can dry out the soil fairly quickly. If you have planted in a sunny area, you will likely need to water this plant more often than if it is planted in a shady area. The type of soil you plant in is also important. Sandy and loamy soils tend to dry out much quicker. You can always amend soil with organic material such as peat moss or compost to encourage moisture retention.

High Water Needs
Koa can tolerate and grow in low light and shady areas which means it prefers about 2 hours of diffused natural light. Remember, low light does not mean NO light! All plants need light to survive, some more than others.
When plants like Koa grow in low light or shady areas, you will want to avoid exposing them to direct sunlight unless direct sun is specified as a light need for the plant. In which case it can tolerate a wide range of low light to direct sun conditions and is very forgiving!
If growing outdoors, you will want to plant Koa in a shady area.Koa is a great option for shade gardens or underneath trees or near fence lines that provide cover from bright sunlight.
If growing indoors, you can grow this type of plant in a lot of different areas of your house. The only thing to keep in mind is that you will want to avoid direct sunlight (unless specified) for Koa. This means if you are growing near a South-facing window, make sure to place it a few feet away from the window. South-facing windows receive the most amount of bright, indirect and direct light a day. Eastern-facing windows receive light in the morning and afternoon shade, while West-facing windows receive sun in the afternoon. North-facing windows receive the least amount of light and would be great candidates for where to place you Koa.

☀️ Light - Diffused Light
Bright Indirect Light or Partial Sun
Koa can grow in bright indirect light which means it prefers at least 4-6 hours of diffused natural light (ideally 6 hours).
Growing Outdoors
When plants thrive in bright, indirect light only this means that you will want to avoid exposing them to direct sunlight unlessKoa is also explicitly noted to tolerate direct sunlight.

If growing outdoors, you will want to plant Koa in an area that receives morning sunlight that's not too harsh and afternoon shade for most natural light. You can consider East facing portions of your garden as those get more morning sun.
Growing Indoors
If growing indoors, you can place near an East-facing window that will receive morning sun for half of the day and afternoon shade. You can also consider placing a few feet away from a South-facing window for diffused light. However, be careful about placing in direct sunlight of a South-facing window as that can cause leaf gscorch and affect growth. You can always diffuse the harsh light of a South-facing window by using a sheer curtain.

🌎 Hardiness Zone
Hardiness zones (or Grow Zones) are areas where Koa is able to grow outdoors year round.
If you are located outside of the specified grow zones, you will need to bring your plant indoors during cooler months if you are growing outside. We recommend growing in a container or indoors.

Zone 10A
30 to 35 F
Zone 10B
35 to 40 F
Zone 11
40 to 50 F
Zone 10A
Zone 10 offers warm temperatures making this zone great for flowers, succulents, and heat-tolerant plants. You may have to be careful with cold-hardy plants and more tender plants like herbs. Most regions in this Zone have humid conditions throughout the year making it a welcoming habitat for many tropical plants.
First Frost:
Early to mid-December is the typical time-frame, but can go as late as late December.

Last Frost:
Late January is the typical time-frame, but at times it can go up to as laste as first week of February.
