Its leaves are the most striking and coveted feature for unique houseplant collectors. This Monstera plant needs repotting (potting up of plant) every two years to ensure healthy growth and development once it matures.

Repotting Monsteras and other houseplants are essential to good plant care. It provides the plant root system with fresh soil and space for growth. The new potting soil means more nutrients, and the new planter means good drainage for root system aeration. Monsteras transplanting into fresh soil promotes spectacular foliage growth. Otherwise, a root-bound plant will give in to root rot and stunted growth.

Like all indoor plants, Monsteras like being repotted every 12 to 18 months based on their growth rate. Some species in this genus are slow growers, like cacti, and prefer to remain in the same planter home for years and only need fresh potting soil mix. While other Monstera plants need repotting every 1 to 2 years for their rapid growth rate, such as Monstera deliciosa plant.

The best time of the year to repot your Monstera plant is early spring (also propagation time) through the summer and late winter. Because the plant is actively growing and can take up the fresh soil nutrients and grow new roots for more space, benefitting plants in developing new leaves.

Before repotting your Monstera deliciosa houseplant, look for these signs and symptoms. These signs indicate that your potted houseplant needs fresh soil and a new planter with drainage holes.

Stunted growth: Root-bound Monstera plants grow dense circling of roots inside the pot, making it difficult for the roots to absorb nutrients from the potting soil. Thereby, aboveground plants stop growing, and new foliage buds develop.

Plant roots grow through the drainage holes at the bottom of the pot (the plant's energy is used more on root growth than the aboveground portion).

The potting soil is old and does not have enough nutrients to support the plant’s new growth. Therefore, it needs more synthetic fertilizer applications.

Potting soil dries out quickly and does not retain water to keep roots hydrated. Therefore you need to apply more water to keep the soil moisture level optimum. (Frequent watering can lead to fungal root rot and bacterial infections).

It has been almost two years since you last repotted your Monstera plant. Therefore it has stopped growing due to lack of space. 

So, repotting Monstera plants into a new pot with a fresh potting mix can prevent them from stunted growth, foliage droop, and poor nutrition. It will also give roots more room for growth and spread.

Step 1: Prepare Supplies for Monstera Repotting

Once you have decided on Monstera repotting, gathering the right tools and materials is vital. So that you can repot Monstera plant easily without damaging its root system and big fenestrated leaves. 

Step 2: Choose the Best Potting Mix for Monsteras

Choosing the best potting mix for Monsteras is key to successful repotting. Otherwise, a wrong potting soil mix will lead to more damage than improving the plant’s roots' growth and spread.

These plants' best potting soil mix is moisture-retentive, lightweight, and airy (providing good aeration to the roots). They do not prefer to grow in overly wet or water-saturated potting medium because of root rot.

So prepare a potting soil mix containing coco coir, peat moss, perlite, lava rock, and worm castings. Blend six portions of orchid bark, four parts of perlite, coco coir, or spaghnum peat moss, and one bit of worm castings. All these ingredients will create a nutrient-rich, aerated, and well-draining soil mix for Monsteras.

Perlite is a soil additive that improves soil texture (especially clay soils), drainage, and aeration. It keeps the root system well-aerated and assists in nutrient absorption and healthy growth. The optimum addition of this material in any houseplant potting mix will prevent root rot by draining the excess water from the container instantly.

Coco coir benefits the root system of its water-retaining capacity. It slowly releases the water and help plant by keeping roots well moistened. It also prevents overwatering by maintaining a well-hydrated growth medium.

Worm castings are organic fertilizers and rich sources of potassium, magnesium, phosphorus, and concentrated nitrates. Adding worm casting in the potting mix will speed up the growth and help roots settle into a new planter.

Stunted growth in Monstera plants indicate the need for a fresh potting soil mix.

Step 3: Choose the Best Pot and Support For Repotting

When repotting the Monstera plant to a new container, it is essential to choose a suitable planter. For example, the new pot should be slightly larger than the current pot. 

The ideal pot size for a growing Monstera plant is 4 inches in diameter for proper adjustment of rootball into a new home and vigorous growth. Be mindful to select the right planter size because the larger pot will lead to overwatering plus lots of overly wet soil and killing your plant with kindness.

Also, the new pot should have drainage holes to drain excess water and prevent the plant from root rot. For planter material, there are two options: plastic or clay (terracotta).

Both container materials have advantages, but terracotta (glazed or unglazed) pots prevent the plant from waterlogged conditions and salt buildup at the root zone. On the other hand, the plastic pot retains water for long periods and is beneficial for extra moisture-loving plants.

If you plan to use a stake like a moss pole or trellis for the Monstera plant, select a pot that is deep enough for the support.

Step 4: Remove your Monstera and Inspect The Root System

After selecting the correct container and preparing the potting mix for repotting, remove the plant from its current container carefully. Turn over the existing pot while gently holding the plant from the stem base, and tap the bottom of the planter with the other hand until it comes out. Be sure not to disturb the roots (otherwise, it will lead to shock and initiate the foliage droop).

Gently run your fingers through the root ball to untangle and remove the old potting soil mix. Also, examine the Monstera roots for browning and rotting. Prune off the brown roots with sharp and sterilized shears to prevent the slow decline of your favorite plant. Otherwise, a fungal lead root rot will kill the plant by encouraging defoliation.

Step 5: Plant your Monstera into a New Pot

Before adding potting mix, spread a thin layer of small-sized gravel into the bottom of the container for good drainage and aeration. Now fill the two-thirds container with a well-draining potting mix and set the stake in the center of the pot. 

Place the rootball into the center as the stem base is 1 inch below the top of the new planter, and tie the stem with a moss pole. Backfill it with soil around the plant base to firm it up, and water thoroughly. Ensure to avoid overpacking the soil around the Monstera deliciosa base because it will impact the aeration.

When repotting Monstera deliciosa that is fully grown, one person should hold the plant from the top while the other supports the roots after it comes from the planter. Also, once your potted plant has reached the desired height, give it a top dressing of fresh potting mix once a year and repotting every three years.

Step 6: Continue with Proper Monstera Plant Care

After repotting Monstera deliciosa, follow these plant care tips to help the plant to overcome the transplanting stress.

Water deeply to ensure the planter drains well, then water once a week during the growing season.

A well-draining soil with proper nutrients promotes new growth and root system spread in a new planter.

Monstera Thai Constellation is a stunning, rare variety of the Monstera species. Similar to appearance as the Monstera Deliciosa, the thai constellation differentiates itself through its beautifully variegated foliage.

Mature Monstera Thai Constellation plants can go for thousands of dollars. These plants, because they don’t occur naturally, are extremely rare and have high demand. Although growers like Costa Farms have tried to make Thai Constellations more accessible by mass producing them, they are still hard to find online on the cheap.

If you’d like to get your hands on this rare plant, but don’t have thousands to shell out, we recommend purchasing nodes or wet sticks online. You can often purchase a stem with a node online for 100-200 or less. You’ll want to make sure you find a reputable retailer online and inspect the variegation on the photos of the node. The more variegation on the stem and node, the more likely your Monstera Thai Constellation will have variegation as it matures.

How to Care For Monstera Thai Constellation

Once you’ve gotten your hands on this rare plant, proper care and maintenance is critical. Because this is a variegated variety, it’ll need proper light and soil to thrive well. Just like other tropical plants, Monstera Thai Constellation prefers high humidity and warm temperatures.

It’s best to place this beauty near a source of bright indirect light for 4-6+ hours and make sure you keep its soil moderately moist. You’ll want to allow the soil to dry out a few inches in between waterings. 

As long as you follow a proper watering schedule and provide your Thai Constellation plant enough light, you’ll have a thriving, lush vine in no time.

Being tropical plants, your Thai Constellation prefers moderately moist soil. You will want to allow the top few inches of soil to dry in between waterings. Unlike green varieties of Monstera Deliciosa which can tolerate moderate to low light conditions, your Monstera Thai Constellation needs more bright light to thrive. This variegated variety lacks chlorophyll and needs more light to make the same amount of energy and nutrition as its solid-colored sisters. 

We recommend you place your Thai Constellation Monstera in a space that receives 8-12 hours of bright, indirect sunlight. A few feet away from a South-facing window to avoid direct sunlight will work well. You can also place it near an east or west-facing window, but we recommend supplementing it with additional light.

If you don’t have access to proper natural light, really consider investing in a proper grow light. 

If you’re starting to see your leaves turn crispy, this could be a sign of overexposure to direct sunlight. Move your Monstera Thai Constellation away from a direct light source into a partially shaded area to help recovery.

Monstera Thai Constellation is a tropical plant used to growing in warm temperatures and humid environments. Most room temperatures will work and the most ideal ranges are between 60 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit. Don’t let temperatures drop below 50 degrees Fahrenheit and move your plant indoors during cooler months if you’re growing outdoors on a patio space.

Avoid placing your Monstera Thai Constellation near air conditioners or exterior doors and windows or heaters to avoid cool and hot air drafts. This can burn the plant creating crispy, brown leaves. 

If your space is dry, we recommend you invest in a small humidifier or group your houseplants together to encourage proper humidity levels. You can also place a pebble tray filled with water near your plant.

Monstera Thai Constellation is an aroid that required well-draining, organically rich soil. If you’re able to get your hands on a specialty aroid mix, we recommend you do so. 

Commercial houseplant potting mix will work as well, but we recommend supplementing with sphagnum moss or coco coir for moisture retention and perlite for extra drainage support.

 Avoid potting mixes with any water-retentive gels to avoid water build up which can lead to root rot.

It’s critical to have proper drainage for your Monstera to prevent fungal diseases like root rot. Always make sure to plant your aroids in containers with drainage holes.

Monstera Thai Constellation is a slow grower but can do well with some regular fertilizing. We recommend you supplement it once a month with a regular, liquid houseplant fertilizer (10-10-10, 20-20-20) during its growing season in the Spring and Summer.

We recommend holding off on any fertilization if you recently repotted your plant. Allow for 6 months for the plant to settle in before feeding it.

Like other monstera plants, Monstera Thai Constellation is toxic to pets (dogs and cats). We recommend you keep your furry friends away from this plant!

How to Propagate Monstera Thai Constellation From Stem Cuttings

The easiest way to propagate your Monstera Thai Constellation is through stem cuttings. As long as you have access to either water, soil, peat moss, or LECA, you can have a new Monstera Thai Constellation in no time. 

Proper propagation will ensure that you’re able to have a healthy new Monstera Thai Constellation in no time. Being a variegated variety, it’s a bit more difficult to propagate and you can’t guarantee that your plant will have the level of variegation as it matures.

Prepare a new container, gloves, sterilized shears and, sphagnum peat moss, or leca depending on your medium of choice.We don’t recommend using soil because there’s a higher susceptibility to build up of moisture leading to root rot of your cuttings! Key drainage and aeration is important. We recommend using peat moss paired with perlite or leca.

Take your mother or parent plant and find a stem that has at least 1-3 nodes (where leaves attach to the stem and aerial roots will appear). It’s critical to find a stem with a node, otherwise roots will not form.

Use your sterilized shears to cut off a section of the stem including those nodes

Place your new cutting with node down into the growing medium. 

Make sure to cover your container to generate a mini-greenhouse and create humidity. Use a plastic wrap or bag and cut a slit or two in the bag to add aeration. 

Place in a warm, sunny spot. Make sure to keep consistently moist.

It’ll take 4-8 weeks  for your stem cuttings to root. Once you start to see new growth and new leaf emerge, you can transplant your new plant into a new container.

Monstera Thai Constellation is a very slow growing plant, so you’ll likely need to repot it every 2-3 years. You’ll know you need to repot your Thai Constellation plant if you start to see roots coming out of the drainage hole of your pot.

Root rot is a common issue with most houseplants including Monstera Thai Constellation. It’s usually caused by moist or waterlogged soil for prolonged periods of time. Symptoms can include rapidly yellowing leaves, stunted growth, and a rotten brown base. If you’re seeing these symptoms, here’s how to treat root rot.

Remove the plant from the pot and gently remove the soil so you can see the root system.

If the roots are brown and mushy, you must take action immediately.

Take sterilized scissors and trim any mushy roots.

Monsteras, also commonly known as swiss cheese plants, are philodendrons with vining heart-shaped leaves that are commonly grown for their lush, green, and fenestrated foliage. Native to South America, they prefer warm temperatures and humid climates. 

They are a great starter plant for beginners and experts alike grown in common varieties, Monstera Deliciosa, Monstera Adansonii, to rare and variegated varieties such as the Monstera Thai Constellation, or Mint Monstera Adansonii.

Monstera adansonii, like most other Aroids (Araceae family), thrives in the high humidity and dapples shade of the jungle canopies. Monsteras are epiphytic, meaning, they produce aerial roots as they grow their vines and are able to hook into wood, soil, rocks, and other debris to grow. 

Epiphytes don’t need soil to grow like other common houseplants and evolved so to survive and get needed nutrition in the dense forests. 

Their emerald green leaves are smaller than that of the Monstera deliciosa, but both plant’s heart-shaped leaves will produce fenestrations. Monstera adansonii is a flowering plant and can produce blooms once the plant is mature, but indoor monsteras will typically never fruit.

Unlike Monstera deliciosa, Monstera adansonii has a much smaller growth habit making it a great option for small spaces.

Monstera adansonii, in particular, can be trained to grow up a moss pole or trailed off of a hanging basket.

Like most tropical indoor plants, Monstera adansonii will thrive best in bright indirect light for 4-6 hours a day. In their native environments, they grow under the dappled shade of the canopies and use their aerial roots to climb up trees to get more sunlight. 

If you’re growing indoors, consider placing your Monstera adansonii a few feet away from a South-facing window (to avoid overexposure to direct sun), or near a west or east-facing window. If you don’t have a great light source in your home, consider investing into a grow light to boost your Monstera’s growth.

Overexposure to direct sunlight can cause your adansonii plant leaves to burn and start to turn crispy. 

Part of the family of jungle plants, Monstera adansonii grows best in warm climates with high humidity. Most household temperatures will work with the most ideal temperatures being between 55 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit. 

If you need to increase your humidity, consider investing in a small humidifier, grouping your houseplants together, or placing your Monstera adansonii near a tray filled with pebbles and water. 

Like most other Aroids, Monstera Adansonii prefers well-draining soil that’s able to retain moisture. If you’re able to get your hands on a specialty aroid mix containing perlite and peat moss, those always work best. 

You can also use regular houseplant potting mix amended with perlite and peat moss for better aeration and moisture retention.


Proper, well-draining soil is critical to your Monstera’s health in preventing soggy soil from improper watering. Soggy soil will lead to fungal diseases like root rot which will kill your plant if not handled quickly.

Monstera’s don’t need fertilizer to grow well, but you can consider supplementing your plant with slow-release fertilizer every month or two. 

The adansonii plant is a flowering plant capable of blooming, but this is a rare occurrence when grown indoors.

Monstera adansonii is a vigorous grower throughout the year, so we recommend an occasional pruning to maintain its appearance.

As your plant matures, it’ll likely develop some yellow or brown leaves. We always recommend trimming unhealthy growth so your plant can focus its energy and reserves towards healthy growth. 

Make sure to never prune more than 70-80% of your plant!

Unfortunately, Monstera adansonii is toxic to pets (toxic to cats and dogs). 

Although Monstera adansonii are typically grown as indoor houseplants, they can be grown outdoors in containers or in your garden in warmer zones. If you’re growing in USDA hardiness zone 10 or above, you can grow your Monstera adansonii year round.

If you’re outside of these zones, we recommend growing your monstera plants in containers and moving them indoors when the temperatures start to drop.

If you’re growing outdoors, you can place your Monstera where it’ll receive bright indirect light for the majority of the day. In hotter regions, plant your Monstera in partial shade to give it respite from direct sunlight. Outdoors, grow you can train your Monstera up a trellis or a fence for a more enchanting feel. 

The easiest way to propagate your Monstera Adansonii is through stem cuttings. You can propagate your stem cuttings in water, soil, or sphagnum peat moss. Regardless of what medium you use, the process is generally the same.

To prepare to propagate your Monstera adansonii make sure to prepare sterilized shears, new soil or water, a new container, and gloves. Follow these steps for monstera propagation:

Wearing gloves and using sterilized scissors, take a cutting with at least 2-4 nodes (part where the leaf meets the stem) from your mother plant.

If you have access to rooting hormone, take the cut tip and dip it in rooting hormone.

Place your new cutting in soil, moss, or water.

It'll take a couple of weeks for your new plant’s roots to form. We recommend transplanting to a new container or pot when the root system looks bushy.

Once your new plant is settled in, make sure to water thoroughly!

Your monstera adansonii will need to be repotted every two to three years. Monstera’s root system needs space to grow, and these plants prefer to not be root bound to get proper nutrition. 

You’ll know it's time to repot if you start to see roots poking out of your pot’s drainage holes.
